Beagle/German Shepherd Mix?!

~Written with a head cold!!~

I'm not sure what I was thinking. Really. I'm not sure one bit!! But I have oft wondered if Rose is, indeed, a mongrel. After all, she's an "unknown"!! Nobody, not the shelter where we adopted Rose, not even our vet, knows what her breeds are!! So I have searched Google Images, periodically. Perhaps she's an Italian Greyhound/Beagle mix? No.... Neither purebred have much fur. According to my dog books, Beagles' and Italian Greyhounds' coats are dense or short. I can comb my fingers through Rose's velvet-soft fur!! A Beagle/German Shepherd cross? Maybe. I have Googled pictures of Beagle/German Shepherd mixes before. Found an image that looked slightly like my girl. Only slightly. Rose is so unique, like every mixed breed canine, that there is no dog identical to her!! Not completely, anyway. Yesterday, I did it again. Looked up pictures of Beagle/German Shepherd crosses on the Internet. You cannot trust Google Images!! Look some famous person up, and chances are your computer screen will be full of inaccurate pictures!! Trust me!! But then I discovered this picture.... Of a canine's head.... Described as "Dave's Beagle/German Shepherd mix". It was posted on someone's blog. "Her" floppy ears were smaller than Rose's, but "she" had a light tan face and dark brown soulful eyes.... Quite similar to that of Rose's!! Oh. My. Goodness.... So Rose must be a Beagle/German Shepherd mix!! (Will I ever get this right? First Rose was a Beagle/German Shepherd/Blue Heeler. Then she was my Beagle/German Shepherd/Italian Greyhound. Now I feel confident that Rose is a Beagle/German Shepherd cross?) Seriously?! When this concept initially entered my mind, I was a little disappointed. Honestly!! I liked the idea of owning a mongrel!! Mutts are the best!! Now Rose is a crossbreed?! Well, hardly anything has changed. She's still unique!! Rose's legs possess velocity and agility, because of the Beagle!! For I read somewhere that those medium-sized hounds are fast runners!! They were bred to be. Beagles hunt--unleashed--on foot!! Plus, Rose will eternally remain my very own "Mystery Dog"!! But today, I declare with confidence: "She's a Beagle/German Shepherd mix!!"

We were told that our beagle/german shepherd mix was a shepherd/lab mix, except she's the size of a beagle. So we determined this ourselves. A truly lovely dog!

Thank-you for commenting!!
A Shepherd/Lab mix that is the size of some Beagle?! Unlikely. Your guess of her having Beagle mixed in is a good notion!! ;)
"Mystery Dogs" are the best kind of mutt!! ;op

I just adopted a beagle/german sheppard mix! she's a four year old little girl that goes by the name of Kenzie :) such a sweet face these dogs have. She looks like a minature sheppard, but with a beagle nose! very protective, loyal, dogs..she will wait by the door until you come out of the shower, or even leave the house. I've had a problem with marking territory in the house recently, thats the beagle in the dog. but other than that, she is the perfect little girl.

My husband and I just came across your page, and our dogs could be sisters!! We adopted our Cammie from a halfway home here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We too, have always wondered what mixes she's made of. She is the perfect dog, regardless of the fact that her nose gets her into trouble (she's a bit naughty) But, truly, the best dog we could ask for.
THank you for sharing your photos!

Cammie sounds adorable!! Her nose gets her in trouble, you mentioned? Yep, she is most likely a Beagle mix!! Rose's nose gets her into trouble, as well!! Enjoy your little girl. "Mystery Dogs" are the best kind of mutt!! ;op

I was wondering how big a beagle/shephard mix would get. I have one of these and she is 8 weeks old and is about 5 lbs. I know it is hard to tell at this age but any answer will help
thanks

I think that size would vary. I adopted Rose as an adult, and since she is really a Mystery Dog {I am only guessing the Beagle/German Shepherd mix thing!!}, I would not know. German Shepherds are large breeds. And Beagles are medium. So she could go either way!! ;op

Omg, your dog is the near twin of my boy! I was always told he was a beagle terrier mix, but I knew better by taking one look at him. Seems they always want to say terrier mix...lol. I adopted my sweetie after he was found roaming the streets of Detroit for three months. He was scared of everything! Nine years later, he's still my baby but he's also a confident wonderful 50 lb lapdog that never wants for anything. I will always own this mix if I can. He's the smartest, sweetest thing and I'm grateful to have him. Wish I could post a pic, it's really amazing how closely they resemble each other..!

And you are my newest Follower!! Number 42!! Score!! ;-D
Your boy sounds so adorable!! I commend you for rescuing him!! What an incredible feeling, huh? ;)
When I adopted Rose, they simply said that she was a "Beagle cross". Well, they had that part correct!! I then asked around, and nearly everybody's opinion lead me to Beagle/German Shepherd mix!! ;op

Sounds just like my beagle/german shep mix- I've been unsure but looking at the pics they look so much alike! Mine though has white at the tip of his tail. His fur is super soft, never barks except in kennel, and is the smartest dog. He looves to get out and run and chase every animal possible- often getting into trouble and a lot of the time seems to have his own ideas. yet he's incredibly loyal and doesn't have an ounce of aggression. We can trust him with any small animal that we say 'no' to and any small child.

"Mine though has white at the tip of his tail.". Not surprising. Most Beagles have white-tipped tails!! Rose's, however, is brown and black!! ;-D
He sounds so Beautifully Unique!! ;op

Yeah, a Beagle/German Shepherd cross seems unlikely. But then again. I also know a Basset Hound/Golden Retriever cross!! So!! Anything is possible regarding both Rose and your baby being Beagle/German Shepherd crosses!! ;op

My fiance and I rescued our puppy from a shelter about 2-3 months ago and he is now almost 6 months old! We were told that he was a lab mix and would be a medium size. A few weeks after bringing him home, we realized not only is he mixed with German Shepherd with the most obvious shepherd color, tail, and body structure, but there is no way our tiny puppy is lab when he weighs only 12 lbs at the time at almost 4 months! We researched some breeds and found he is mixed with beagle and we absolutely love him! He is 22 lbs now at 6 months and were told he will not grow much more. He has a deep bark, the body build and color of a German Shepherd and the size, personality , and head (especially nose) of a beagle! Everywhere we go we are told that he is the best puppy anyone has met and they wish he was there's! I guess we lucked out with our cute little guy and I wouldn't wish for a more lovable, loyal puppy!

I took the liberty of visiting your Blog prior to "publishing" this comment. Question. Is that a picture of your puppy on top? My goodness.... He looks so much like my Rose!! They could be relatives!! A Labrador retriever mix? I do not see that, either!! ;op

Love your blog! I just rescued a 4 year old beagle/shepherd mix. I named her Moxie and she is just the sweetest little girl ever! She is all of 41 lbs and built like a beagle with the black and tan of the shepherd. She follows me everywhere. Her and my other dog get along great and I couldn't be happier. Looking forward to many years of having Moxie in my life.

Hi. My Bella is 10. I SO wish I could post a photo, she looks so much like Rose.
Bella is a beagle/shepherd mix. She loves us with every bit of her 45 lbs! She is loyal, loving and as spoiled as a pet should be. She is fabulous with kids, loves to play and is good with other dogs at the dog park. Her true joys involve sniffing anything, walking on her leash and loving her mommy & daddy.
I pray we can have her for another few good years. This is a marvelous mix. Smart, funny & active.

Hi: I found your post by doing what you were doing - Googling dogs that looked like mine - I just got Misty (adopted, she's 9 yrs old) and she is supposed to be a Beagle/Shepherd mix. Her face looks a lot like Rose's. When I took her for her first vet visit, the vet thought she was part Shar-Pei. I looked that up and found that was another "designer" dog, called a Sharp Eagle. I love that!!!! I do kind of think Misty has all three of those in her, maybe some other (Her back legs look like greyhound). I like calling her a "Sharp Eagle" though!!!

Misty sounds absolutely adorable!! Good for you in not only adopting a mutt, but an older dog, as well!! ;op

Max is a rescue pup, they told me he was a Shepard beagle mix. He's 2 now and about 35lbs. Super friendly, still feisty as all hell (he can usually be bribed with treats, but even a treat won't distract him from jumping up at his newest best friend ever) he's a total sweetie. I'm so glad I found him
