"Good Girl, Rose!!"

Life is an interesting ride. It's sorrowful. Happy. Humorous. Triumphant. It is an amazing combination of all those four wrapped in one. Correct? And sometimes, when you least expect it, life deals out surprises, which are seemingly coincidental. Seemingly coincidental. I do not believe in such things!! Why? Because there are no such things as coincidences. And then when you find yourself "in the right place at the right time.".... I recently experienced such a seemingly coincidental surprise occurrence. The other night, at 12:30 AM. I awoke to a recognizable sound of Rose's paw pads and claws stepping against our laminate floor. I was still half asleep. My eyes were weary, and head groggy, yet I immediately suspected something: Rose had an accident in our great room. Oh no!! I mentally groaned. My heart sank deep, deep, deep within me. This has been Rose's history with us. Accidents. Some canines are wonderful at awaking their owners when they need outside. Rose never has been. She stands up off of her comically-sized dog pillow, walks away, and heads toward our great room sliding glass door, which leads to outside. Bright girl.... Then, if nobody responds in the darkened, sleeping house, Rose has an accident!! Not that I blame her too harshly for this. After all, "when you gotta go, you gotta go".... I just give her a "You're-in-trouble" glare, temporary "silent treatment", and clean the accident up!! I halfheartedly pulled myself out of bed. I was dreading what I'd find in our great room. A damp puddle swiftly seeping its way through the carpet? An entire bowel movement? Both? Then, Rose turned around. She was in the bedroom doorway. Rose had heard and seen me sit up on "our" creaky bed. She walked toward me and gently "nibbled" my fingertips. I gasped. This is my mutt's unusual signal which means that she needs to urinate!! I was wide-awake now, and completely alert!! I bolted out of bed with urgent movement. I slipped on some blue crocs. I linked Rose's red leash to her collar. And together we stepped outside. She sniffed around our backyard, her leash still attached to my right wrist. Which sometimes Rose forgets about!! Then she bolts onward in a high-velocity run.... Until realizing that we are "connected"!! It is kind of funny!! Rose went on a quest to discover the "perfect" location, searching carefully as though looking for some buried treasure. But she finally squat her hind legs, and urinated!! I felt so very proud of my little girl at that moment in time!! She did it!! Yes!! Rose told me, telepathically, that she needed outside!! Score!! I felt like some proud mother of a toddler child in the process of potty-training!! Victory is ours!! This was a colossal, albeit fleeting, accomplishment!! I made an enormous deal about it!! I whispered "Good girl!! Good girl!! Good girl!! Good girl!!" countless times. I rewarded Rose with a liberal amount of grated cheddar cheese. Suppose she got any vibes from me that awaking Mama at midnight is good? Or was I simply "in the right place at the right time."? Hmmm....

Well done Rose! Looks like she has learned that you like to be told when she needs to go outside. Hope you will have no more indoor accidents to clean up.

Aw, good catch on your part! WHen you gotta go, you gotta go! I try to take Finn out at 8pm so we don't have accidents midway through the night.

Good job Rose!!! I hope she starts to let you know when she has to go now. My Zoe will whine REALLY loud when she needs to go. There's just no ignoring it even if you're asleep. LOL!

Rose actually has not had any accidents in quite some time!! I forgot to mention that little fact!! Darn short-term memory loss!! ;op

That is funny!! Real funny. ;-}
I actually thought about possibly sending Rose the wrong message.... What if my grated cheddar cheese reward gives her this idea that she was "a good girl" just for awaking me at midnight....? I thought about that.... ;op

Thank-you for the comment!! I appreciated your advice!!
I do take Rose for daily night walks up and down our cul-de-sac at 10:00 PM before bed. Occasionally, however, she still has to go.... ;op

Yay Rose! Pawsome job! I am really proud of you! It is great you were able to awaken Raelyn to let you out. I do it all the time: I go to her door and stand and stare at her until she wakes up, and then I run down the hall the minute she opens her eyes. Works like a charm! It gets easier the more times you do it, so very soon Raelyn will wake like clockwork the minute you let her know telepathically you have to go. So, keep up the good work!

P.S. Grated cheddar cheese sounds so good! *drool....

Raelyn, good job on preventing an accident! That's always a great thing. As for worrying if this will make Rose inclined to wake you in the middle of the night, I completely understand--and think you might be right. My husband started taking Desmond out around midnight--even if Desmond and I were already sleeping (he'd wake Des for one last potty break). Now, Desmond pretty much wakes up every night at midnight, even if he doesn't have to go out.

That's right!! I've been trying to train Mama in such things, which is how I began "nibbling" her fingertips!! Whatever it takes, I say!! I can forgive Mama, though.... She is kind of slow!! ;op

My words were sincere. I am weeping with you. My heart literally breaks for little Charlotte. Plus her loving family that she left behind. Those words came from the depth of my heart. I am so, so, so very sorry. You are in my thoughts....
